Promoting Dolphin Science and Conservation

The Dolphin Communication Project's (DCP) mission is to promote the scientific study of dolphins and inspire their conservation. In addition to the core group of DCP scientists and students conducting observational research on dolphin behavior, DCP is also a network of organizations and individuals involved in research, education, and conservation issues focusing on dolphins. DCP offers ecotours, classroom visits, virtual lessons, a podcast, digital educational resources, peer-reviewed scientific articles, internships, college-level field courses, research project collaboration for university students, collaborative research projects with senior researchers at various universities and institutions, and more.

DCP strongly believes that fostering an appreciation for dolphins that leads to increased conservation efforts requires sound scientific knowledge of their behavior, biology, ecology, and cognition. DCP aims to bring together those individuals and institutions keen to expand our knowledge of dolphin science and strongly encourages and aims to support the expansion of scientific research programs focusing on dolphin science.

A Lasting Collaboration

DCP’s relationship with Dolphin Encounters on Blue Lagoon Island Bahamas, dates back to 2004, when the first team of DCP interns visited for preliminary data collection, baseline sound recordings, meeting the animals, and building relationships. Over the next 15 years, DCP researchers and students visited Dolphin Encounters regularly, collecting data for research questions ranging from dolphin bubbles to ambient sound to cognition. You can even visit the DCP website and take a trip down memory lane, reading through old field reports and blogs!

Dolphin Encounters is proud to support DCP’s on-going research throughout the world and you can too! During your visit to Blue Lagoon Island, stop by our gift shop for a Dolphin Protector Kit. Want to help from the comfort of your own home? Check out DCP’s online store to purchase DCP merchandise, become a member, or donate. And visit the DCP website for all the latest dolphin science including free Kids Science Activities, recorded webinars, The DolphinPod episodes, and more.
