Sustainability and Conservation at Blue Lagoon Island

Blue Lagoon Island, home of Dolphin Encounters, is a recognized leader in animal welfare, conservation and sustainable tourism in The Bahamas. Our commitment goes far beyond a day at the beach; it's a deep-rooted promise to the planet, to our animals, and to the community we call home. We weave these values into every experience we offer.

Humane Animal Care

Our dedication to animal welfare is at the very core of our mission. We were proud to become the first facility in The Bahamas to achieve certification from the American Humane Conservation program. This recognition, earned through rigorous standards and audits, is a testament to the humane care our animals receive every day. In addition, our animal programs consistently exceed global standards, a fact reinforced by our accreditation from the Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks and Aquariums and our membership in IMATA.

Protecting Our Environment

Our role as environmental stewards extends to every part of our island home. The Bahamas National Trust has designated Blue Lagoon Island as an Important Bird Area, a sanctuary that supports 79 native and migratory bird species. We are also proud to be a member of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council and hold an ECO partnership from Sustainable Travel International. On a national level, we actively participate in committees on biodiversity, invasive species and CITES policy.

Community and Education Initiatives

We believe that true conservation requires community engagement and a passion for education. Our signature program, Project B.E.A.C.H., has empowered thousands of volunteers to remove over one million pieces of trash from our shorelines. For more than two decades, we've had the honor of hosting Nassau’s International Coastal Cleanup. Education is central to our work, with our outreach programs teaching students across the nation about conservation, climate change and marine ecosystems. We also provide valuable opportunities through annual internships, a Birds and Botany program for high school students, and work-study workshops.

Sustainable and Cultural Tourism

Every visitor to Blue Lagoon Island becomes a part of our story. We offer eco-tourism experiences like our Eco-Nature and historic walking tours, which are designed to be both educational and inspiring. Guests learn about local wildlife, cultural heritage, and our sustainable practices. Beyond our natural environment, our Bahamian Village serves as a vibrant hub for local artisans, food producers, and entrepreneurs. By collaborating with the Ministry of Environment on national sustainability efforts, including plastic reduction campaigns, we are helping to build a more sustainable future for The Bahamas.

In essence, Blue Lagoon Island is not just a destination; it's a living model of how animal welfare, environmental stewardship, community education, and cultural preservation can be integrated into a single operation, creating a powerful example for the region and beyond.
